Micky Ward, is the name of the boxer that Mark Wahlberg plays in his upcoming movie "The Fighter" (has it been released yet?) . Apparently, you need a strong core to be a strong boxer, cause thats where all your power comes from. This is the Micky Ward workout, as printed in Men's Health (Australia), February 2011 issue. I think I'm gonna try this workout this week (but I'll replace the medicine ball twists with v ups... I dont do weights)
Micky Ward Workout
Push ups - 15 reps
McGill curl up - 15 reps each leg
Lie face up- right leg straight, left leg bent so your foot is flat on the floor.
With palms under your lower back arch, lift your head and shoulders (DONT BEND YOUR LOWER BACK)
Pause, then lower
Side crunch - 15 reps each side
Hip up- 10 per side.
Lie on your left side, propping your upper body up with your left elbow and forearm and keeping your knees straight. Raise your hips so that your torso is beyond parallel to the floor and your body forms a straight line from your head to your ankles. Pause, then lower.
Medicine ball twist - 15 reps
Repeat this circuit 2-3 times.

Shin conditioning.

One of the key "trademarks" of a kickboxer, is hard shins. How hard? Calcified baseball bats.
When I first started learning Muay Thai (oopsss... kickboxing-thai rules, I'm not sanctioned to use "Muay Thai"), my shins were at the weakest stage. Weak, really weak, plus I had really nice calves for wearing stillettos ( no kidding, I had weak legs). In mid 2010, I injured my already weak knees and had to lay off training for a while. My doctor told me "strengthen your legs first, before you want to train again". (He was a Nak Muay in his youth, so whatever he says, I follow to the T)... No wonder my legs didnt give out the "nice" sound whenever I kicked the pads.
It was only AFTER the Persatuan Tomoi Gombak seminar, I started taking shin and leg conditioning seriously. My legs were weak, I couldnt do weighted exercises, so I only did bodyweight squats, 150 reps daily and jumped rope. After a few months, when my kicks started giving out the "oooommph" sound when I kick the pads, I started conditioning my shins.
Shin conditioning is a topic that most people misinterpret. Some are still influenced by the Van Damme movie and think in Kickboxing, the only way to condition your shins is to kick trees. Big mistake... especially for newbies.
Now, since I havent been in a fight, nor have I fought in a ring, what I'm about to share is what I actually did and went through to condition my shins. (i dont know if they're as hard a fighter's, but my nephew did remark "tajamnya betis uncle" (it means "uncle's shins are sharp), when I blocked his kick with my shin.. If you want to try what I did, please do so at your own risk.
First stage : I kicked a foam filled heavy bag (my wife got me this for my 29th birthday), 20 minutes of round kicks and jump rope, alternating 30 seconds of jumping rope, with 30 round kicks. I did that for a few months.
Second stage: I replaced the foam filled heavy bag with a sawdust filled one, and did the same thing. To be honest, after the first time I worked on a sawdust filled bag, I took a week off training cause my shins were too sore. Once my shins were feeling better, I had a go at the sawdust bag again, and noticed an improvement in my shin's condition. They were no longer sore, and I could "bend" the bag with my kicks.
There, thats how I conditioned my shins. I didnt kick the bag everyday though,just every other day.
Alternatively, you could try this following method which I found on the internet.

You could break your shins if you kick hard on a sharp surface. You could OD on calcium. You could get a sunburn from the sun. You could get a frostbite from the ice-packs. You could choke on fish-bones. You could develop a blood clot that travels to your heart and gives you a heart attack. So, use your good judgement and you’ll be on your way to devastating shins.

You will need Methyl-Salicylate (found in liniments), heavy-bag/Thai pad, cold compress, 600 mg calcium + vitamin D supplements.
1. Apply Methyl-Salicylate generously to your shins and warm them up by going for a 20 min run. MS causes local vascodilation and good blood flow. You can also substitute with ditdajow.
2. Kick Thai Pads, or a banana bag till your shins (not the skin or muscle above it) are slightly sore. Doing this in the sun is recommended. (Promotes vitamin D production for efficient calcium absorption.) Approximately 10 minutes of hard kicking on a regular pad surface should be sufficient for a beginner. Use your judgement.
3. Sit down. Point your toes, flex your calves: repeat 10 times each leg. Apply more Methyl-Salicylate and massage the shins and surrounding muscles deeply. Attend to localised knots/bumps if you feel any and try to break them up. The blood carries calcium, protein and all the good stuff which actually thickens up the shins.
4. Repeat steps 2-3 at least 4 times a day.
5. Apply an ice pack to both shins for the next 20-30 minutes. Massage and apply ice-pack repeatedly for as often you wish upto the next 48 hours. Do not kick the bag for at least the next day.
5. Take a 600 mg Calcium + vitamin D supplement. Else, drink a lot of milk and water. Eat fish, chew its bones, eat them.
6. Having taken *at least* one day off, repeat all the steps above.
This technique is more than just a superficial numbing of the nerves. In a month or two, you should be left with *denser* shins. Also, spar moderately to get a feel for what striking with it feels like.
A word of warning: You could break your shins if you kick hard on a sharp surface. You could OD on calcium. You could get a sunburn from the sun. You could get a frostbite from the ice-packs. Why kickboxing?
Why do I say we train kickboxing, here at Furious Styles? The answer is simple. In my most humble opinion, I believe that "kickboxing" is the general term to cover all styles; be it K1, showtime, Thai Rules, Tomoi.
Initially, we used the term "Muay Thai". This is because we have always been training and practising Muay Thai. I learned from Kru Antonio and later Kru AJ. In 2010, we were trained intensively by Kru Raja Ahmad Talmizi and Kru Azman Abdul (of the Sitkrumat, the Naga Api and the Persatuan Tomoi Gombak Muay Thai Camps, respectively) and are entrusted to share Muay Thai knowledge to anyone who's keen. All we could learn about Muay Thai and how to guide people into training it, we learnt from these two great men. God bless them always.
However, lately we have been receiving static and friction from some members of the Muay Thai community in Malaysia (not all, but just from a few distinguished gentlemen). To prevent conflict and to avoid creating enemies. we believe its best to use the term kickboxing from now on.Since we use the term "kickboxing", it means the "distinguished gentlemen" who think they own Muay Thai in Malaysia have no locus to criticise us.
But, for the record and for all the world to know, I'm putting it down in this blog ; we're all still Nak Muay, regardless of our club's name. We stand by and support Sitkrumat, Naga Api and Persatuan Tomoi Gombak in spreading and sharing what we know about kickboxing (Thai rules). Some people and clubs may put us down in the FaceBook, or talk badly about us, without having even met us or see us train. To these people, check this out, the more you talk smack about us, the more people will come and seek us out. You train eight limbs, we train eight limbs.
In addition to the above, another reason why we use the term "kickboxing", is because our team registered with the WKN, the World Kickboxing Network. To date, our team is the only team in Malaysian Borneo, that is registered with the WKN.

Welcome to the boxer's rebellion here at Furious Styles Club. We're a group of boxing/ kickboxing / Muay Thai enthusiasts who share what we know, with everyone we know and anyone who wants to know on a pro bono basis. We only ask that a small contribution be made to our "Febreeze / Minyak Tomoi Fund" (one time only).
What we know and share:
a) Kickboxing (showtime rules, K1 and Thai rules). We do not use the term "Muay Thai" as there are some Nak Muay who are not pleased with our activities... they may have trademark rights on the term "Muay Thai"? Allahualam
b) Boxing
c) Brotherhood (We have a lawyer, an it specialist, 5 prison officers , a quantity surveyor, a contractor in our circle. All united by the brotherhood of the glove)

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
Our training hours are usually at 7.00 pm onwards, throughout the week. However, please note that we all do have our own day jobs, babies, wives... sometimes we wont be able to train.
